One Year Curriculum for Jazz Studies

Level 1 -

Jazz Theory I

This course will cover the basics of Jazz harmony and chord progressions. Students will learn about Jazz scales, modes, and chord voicings.

Jazz History I

This course will cover the origins and development of Jazz music, from its African-American roots to its evolution into a global art form.

Jazz Improvisation I

This course will focus on the fundamentals of Jazz improvisation, including scales, modes, chord progressions, and soloing techniques.

Jazz Piano I

This course will provide an introduction to Jazz piano playing, covering basic concepts such as chord voicings, rhythm, and soloing.

Jazz Ensemble I

Students will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge and improvisational skills in a group setting, playing with other musicians in a Jazz ensemble.

Level 2 -

Jazz Theory II

This course will build on the concepts covered in Jazz Theory I, focusing on more advanced chord progressions, substitutions, and reharmonization techniques.

Jazz History II

This course will cover the post-World War II era of Jazz, including bebop, hard bop, and modal Jazz.
