Rhythm Studies: One Year Lesson Plan
Goal
The goal of this one year lesson plan is for students to develop a strong sense of rhythm and timing, and to be able to apply these skills in various musical contexts.
Overview
The rhythm studies curriculum is divided into four quarters, each covering different aspects of rhythm and timing. Each quarter is 12 weeks long, with one 60-minute class per week.
Level 1: Foundations of Rhythm
- Weeks 1-3: Introduction to rhythm notation and counting
- Weeks 4-6: Basic rhythmic patterns and exercises
- Weeks 7-9: Rhythmic variations and syncopation
- Weeks 10-12: Application of rhythm in simple songs and exercises
Level 2: Advanced Rhythmic Techniques
- Weeks 1-3: Polyrhythms and odd time signatures
- Weeks 4-6: Rhythmic improvisation and creativity
- Weeks 7-9: Groove and feel
- Weeks 10-12: Application of advanced rhythmic techniques in songs and exercises
Level 3: Rhythm in Ensemble Playing
- Weeks 1-3: Playing with a metronome and click track
- Weeks 4-6: Rhythm section playing (bass, drums, guitar, keyboards)
- Weeks 7-9: Rhythmic interaction and communication within an ensemble
